12-Day Serengeti Great Migration River Crossing Photographic Safari

Front-row seats to nature's greatest spectacle — Mara River crossings through a lens

About This Safari

Experience the raw drama of the Great Migration's most iconic moments — the Mara River crossings — on a safari designed exclusively for photographers. This 12-day journey spans the northern Serengeti's Lamai Wedge and Kenya's Masai Mara, tracking mega-herds as they brave crocodile-infested waters and predator-lined banks.

Your base alternates between two luxury mobile camps, strategically relocated to follow the migration's pulse. Each camp offers en-suite tents, charging stations for gear, and dedicated editing spaces. Custom Land Cruisers with pop-up roofs, bean bags, and window mounts ensure stable platforms for low-angle shots, while a maximum of four guests per vehicle guarantees unobstructed views.

Days begin before dawn with coffee delivered to your tent, followed by full-day river vigils at known crossing points. Your photographic guide — a published wildlife photographer — provides real-time coaching on exposure, composition, and anticipating behaviour. Midday reviews sharpen technique; evenings feature fireside critiques and post-processing workshops.

Beyond crossings, the itinerary captures predator action (lion, leopard, cheetah), elephant herds in the Mara's Musiara Marsh, and the Serengeti's golden light on kopjes. A scenic flight between camps reveals the migration's vast scale from above — a perspective few witness.

Ideal for serious amateurs and semi-pro photographers seeking portfolio-defining images, this safari balances intense field time with creature comforts. Non-photographer partners welcome; the spectacle transcends the lens.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

  1. Day 1

Day 1 – Arrival in Tanzania and a Night in Arusha Arrive in Tanzania and meet your safari team before transferring to your accommodation in Arusha. After your journey, enjoy a relaxed evening at Gran Meliá Arusha, surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of northern Tanzania. This first night provides time to rest, recover from your travels, and prepare for the photographic adventure ahead. Destination: Arusha Accommodation: Gran Meliá Arusha

  2. Day 2

After breakfast, transfer to Arusha Airport for a scenic flight to Kogatende, in the northern Serengeti. From the moment you arrive, the landscape changes dramatically as you enter one of Africa's most spectacular wildlife regions. Begin your first game drive through Northern Serengeti, keeping an eye out for large herds of wildebeest and zebra, resident predators, elephants, giraffes, and other wildlife. The coming days will be dedicated to exploring the Mara River ecosystem and positioning ourselves in areas where the migration is active. Destination: Northern Serengeti National Park

  3. Day 3

Today marks the beginning of your dedicated Great Migration river-crossing photographic experience. Spend the day exploring the Mara River region, where thousands of wildebeest and zebra gather during their northward migration. River crossings are unpredictable and can happen quickly—or not at all. This is where patience becomes essential. Rather than chasing every sighting, your photographic approach will focus on finding promising locations, understanding herd behaviour, observing the terrain, and waiting for the right opportunity. When the moment finally comes, the scene can be extraordinary: dust rising from the banks, animals gathering at the water's edge, powerful movement, and the dramatic struggle of crossing the river. Destination: Northern Serengeti National Park

  4. Day 4

The migration does not follow a timetable, and neither should a serious photographic safari. Today is dedicated to following the herds and reading the landscape. Your experienced safari team will monitor wildlife movement and help position you where photographic opportunities are most promising. There will also be opportunities to photograph predators following the migration, including lions, cheetahs, and leopards, as well as the smaller and often overlooked moments of wildlife behaviour. The emphasis is not simply on seeing animals, but on understanding and photographing behaviour, interaction, atmosphere, and story. Destination: Northern Serengeti National Park

  5. Day 5

Enjoy another full day in Northern Serengeti, giving you one final opportunity to photograph the migration around the Mara River and surrounding plains. With several days in the region, there is no need to rush. You can return to promising areas, wait for changing conditions, explore new locations, and take advantage of the best morning and afternoon light. Whether the day produces a dramatic crossing, predator action, or a quiet portrait of the migration landscape, the goal remains the same: to create memorable images while experiencing the Serengeti on its own terms. Destination: Northern Serengeti National Park

  6. Day 6

Today you travel south toward Central Serengeti, enjoying game viewing along the way. The landscape gradually changes as you leave the northern migration zone behind. Central Serengeti is renowned for its resident wildlife and exceptional opportunities for photographing lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, and large herbivore populations. Arrive at your accommodation and settle in before enjoying time in the Serengeti wilderness. Destination: Central Serengeti

  7. Day 7

Today is dedicated to one of Africa's greatest photographic subjects: big cats. Central Serengeti provides excellent opportunities to photograph lions, cheetahs, and potentially leopards. Instead of simply searching for sightings, the day is built around observing animal behaviour and looking for compelling photographic moments. Watch for interactions between pride members, hunting behaviour, cubs, territorial displays, resting predators, and the subtle moments that reveal the character of these magnificent animals. Destination: Central Serengeti

  8. Day 8

A photographic safari is about more than finding wildlife—it is about making photographs. Today focuses on the relationship between light, behaviour, background, composition, and timing. Early morning and late afternoon provide opportunities for atmospheric images, silhouettes, backlighting, environmental portraits, and intimate wildlife moments. Your guide will help position the vehicle and anticipate behaviour while allowing sufficient time to work on different photographic compositions. The result is an opportunity to move beyond simple wildlife records and create images with atmosphere, emotion, and visual storytelling. Destination: Central Serengeti

  9. Day 9

After your final morning in Central Serengeti, begin your journey toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The route provides opportunities for additional wildlife viewing and changing landscapes as you approach the highlands of the Ngorongoro region. Arrive at your accommodation and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the conservation area. Destination: Ngorongoro Conservation Area

  10. Day 10

Descend into the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater for a full day of wildlife photography. The crater's enclosed ecosystem supports an extraordinary concentration of wildlife, including lions, elephants, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, and many bird species. The crater also provides dramatic photographic backdrops, with wildlife framed by the surrounding volcanic walls and expansive grasslands. Spend the day exploring different areas of the crater while looking for opportunities to photograph both iconic species and intimate behavioural moments. Destination: Ngorongoro Crater

  11. Day 11

After breakfast, leave the Ngorongoro region and travel back toward Arusha. This is your final day in the safari country, offering time to reflect on the experiences and photographs captured throughout your journey. Arrive in Arusha and check into your accommodation for your final evening in Tanzania. Destination: Arusha

  12. Day 12

Enjoy your final morning in Tanzania before your transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight. Your 12-day photographic journey comes to an end, leaving you with unforgettable memories of the Great Migration, the Serengeti wilderness, and the extraordinary wildlife of northern Tanzania.
